Maureen was a natural athlete and loved playing athletic games. Her ability to perform perfectly complemented her love of sport. It was evident when she took home every Feis for theatre and drama which Ireland could offer. When she turned 14 years old, she was admitted to the world-renowned Abbey Theater and pursued her dreams of performing in classical theatre and operatic vocals. This course was to be altered, however, when Charles Laughton, after seeing screenings of Maureen, became mesmerized by her beautiful, captivating eyes. Prior to casting her on the screen in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton as well as his co-star Erich Pommer, changed her name changed from Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" - a bit more concise name for the marquee. Maureen was under contract with Laughton to shoot her next film in America at RKO Pictures (The Hunchback of Notre Notre Dame 1939). The contract Maureen signed with Laughton was purchased by RKO following the epic film became a huge successful. Maureen Laughton was featured in two major motion films when she was 19 years old.
